Eucalyptus 80–82% is the pharmacopoeia-grade essential oil of Eucalyptus globulus, rectified (re-distilled) so that its key constituent 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) makes up 80–82% of the oil. This is the fresh, camphoraceous, “clearing” oil of chest rubs, saunas, and sports balms. Eucalyptol is antimicrobial against a wide range of bacteria and fungi [1, 2], anti-inflammatory, and a penetration enhancer, and eucalyptus oil is a traditional insect repellent and muscle-rub ingredient. Its benefits come with firm limits: 1,8-cineole-rich oils must never be applied to or near the faces of infants and young children because of the risk of breathing difficulties, and accidental ingestion of even small amounts is dangerous [3]. ORY® therefore uses eucalyptus in adult body, foot, scalp, and soap products, at conservative dilutions, and not in facial or lip cosmetics.
What is Eucalyptus (80–82%) Essential Oil made of?
Eucalyptus 80–82% is steam-distilled from E. globulus leaves, then rectified to concentrate eucalyptol and remove harsh low-boiling fractions. Composition [1, 4]:
- 1,8-Cineole / eucalyptol (80–82%): Antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, mucolytic, cooling-camphoraceous; penetration enhancer.
- α-Pinene (2–8%), limonene (1–5%), p-cymene, aromadendrene: Supporting antimicrobial terpenes; limonene oxidizes to an allergen.
- Globulol and α-terpineol (traces): Minor.
- Dermal maximum: No dermal limit set (Tisserand), but not for children under 10 on/near the face; typical leave-on 1–3% (adult body), rinse-off up to 3%, soap 3–4% [4].
What skin type is best suited for Eucalyptus (80–82%) Essential Oil?
Eucalyptus is a body- and foot-care oil rather than a facial ingredient:
- Oily: Purifying body washes and foot products.
- Acne-prone: Body and back blemish washes (rinse-off, 1–2%); avoid the face.
- Normal: Invigorating body oils, muscle balms, foot creams.
- Combination: Body use only.
- Dry: Foot balms with shea (0.5–1%).
- Mature: Muscle and joint rubs; not facial.
- Sensitive: Use ≤0.5% or avoid; can tingle and irritate.
What hair type is best suited for Eucalyptus (80–82%) Essential Oil?
Eucalyptus refreshes and purifies the scalp:
- Oily scalp: Degreasing, antimicrobial, cooling — a classic oily-scalp and dandruff oil at 0.5–1% in shampoo.
- Dandruff-prone scalp: Antimicrobial support in shampoos and pre-shampoo scalp oils.
- Dry or damaged: Aromatic addition to hair oils (lengths and ends).
- Straight, wavy, curly, coily: Fragrance and scalp-comfort addition at low levels for all textures.
- Color-treated: Low-level use; avoid the first 48 hours after coloring.
- Sensitive scalp: Use at the lowest end of the range; patch test.
- Mature or thinning: Scalp-massage oils (with rosemary and lavender) for a healthy scalp environment.
What are the benefits of Eucalyptus (80–82%) Essential Oil?
Eucalyptus 80–82%’s benefits are supported by antimicrobial and pharmacological studies [1, 2]:
- Antimicrobial: Eucalyptol and pinene inhibit bacteria and fungi, including scalp and foot microbes [1, 2].
- Anti-inflammatory: Reduces inflammatory cytokines; soothing in muscle rubs.
- Cooling and decongesting aroma: The classic “clearing” oil for steam, sauna, and shower products.
- Deodorizing: Foot and body products.
- Insect repellent: Traditional use (lemon eucalyptus, E. citriodora, is the EPA-registered repellent species — a different oil).
- Penetration enhancement: Improves delivery of other actives in balms.
- Scalp purification: Dandruff and oily-scalp support.
- Soap performance: Strong, lasting scent; mild acceleration; pairs with peppermint, lavender, tea tree, lemon.
Dual use across ORY® product lines
Eucalyptus serves adult body/foot skincare, scalp haircare, and soap; its cosmetics role is limited to non-facial products.
