☑ Cosmetics — full dual-use ingredient

Soy extract is derived from the seeds of Glycine soja (soybean) and delivers a distinctive mix of isoflavones, small proteins, and lipids. Its best-known skin action is brightening: soybean trypsin inhibitor and Bowman-Birk inhibitor block the PAR-2 receptor pathway that transfers pigment into skin cells, reducing mottled pigmentation without bleaching melanocytes [1]. A 12-week double-blind, vehicle-controlled study found a soy moisturizer significantly improved skin tone, blotchiness, dullness, fine lines, and texture [2]. The isoflavones genistein and daidzein act as antioxidants and phytoestrogens that support collagen and elasticity in aging skin [3, 4]. Soy’s many forms — extract, oil, and hydrolyzed protein — allow ORY® to use it across all four product lines.

What is Soy Extract made of?

Soy extract is prepared from non-GMO soybeans by water/ethanol extraction (bioactive extract), pressing (oil), or enzymatic hydrolysis (protein). Its active constituents:

    • Isoflavones (genistein, daidzein): Polyphenolic antioxidants with mild phytoestrogenic activity that support collagen synthesis and reduce UV damage [3, 4].
    • Soybean trypsin inhibitor (STI) and Bowman-Birk inhibitor (BBI): Small proteins that inhibit PAR-2 activation, reducing melanosome transfer — the brightening mechanism [1].
    • Phospholipids and essential fatty acids (linoleic, oleic): Barrier-supporting lipids in soybean oil.
    • Vitamin E and phytosterols: Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory support.
    • Hydrolyzed soy protein: Amino-acid peptides that bind to hair and skin for moisture and strength.

What skin type is best suited for Soy Extract?

Soy extract suits all seven ORY® skin types, with the strongest case for uneven tone and aging:

    • Mature: Isoflavones support collagen, elasticity, and thickness in postmenopausal and photoaged skin [3, 4].
    • Combination: Brightens blotchiness and evens tone without heaviness [2].
    • Normal: Antioxidant, brightening maintenance.
    • Dry: Soybean oil lipids and phospholipids restore the barrier.
    • Sensitive: Non-irritating; a gentle alternative to acids for pigmentation.
    • Acne-prone: Extract (not oil) helps fade post-inflammatory marks; soybean oil is moderately comedogenic, so choose the extract.
    • Oily: Water-based extract for brightening; avoid heavy soy oil.

What hair type is best suited for Soy Extract?

Soy protein is a workhorse in haircare, and soy isoflavones offer scalp antioxidant support:

    • Dry or damaged: Hydrolyzed soy protein penetrates and coats the fiber, improving moisture and reducing breakage.
    • Color-treated or chemically processed: Protein reinforcement for weakened fibers.
    • Curly and coily: Adds strength and moisture retention; balance with emollients to avoid protein overload.
    • Mature or thinning: Antioxidant isoflavones support a healthy scalp environment (cosmetic support only).
    • Straight and wavy: Light protein for body and shine.
    • Sensitive, oily, and dandruff-prone scalp: Neutral; use low-level extract in water-based formulas.

What are the benefits of Soy Extract?

Soy extract’s benefits are supported by controlled clinical studies [1, 2, 3, 4]:

    • Brightening and even tone: Reduces mottled pigmentation and blotchiness via PAR-2 inhibition [1, 2].
    • Anti-aging: Improves fine lines, texture, and elasticity; isoflavones increase collagen and dermal thickness [3, 4].
    • Antioxidant: Genistein and vitamin E protect against UV-induced oxidative damage.
    • Barrier and hydration: Phospholipids and fatty acids restore lipids and reduce water loss.
    • Anti-inflammatory: Calms redness and UV-induced inflammation.
    • Hair strength: Hydrolyzed soy protein improves tensile strength and moisture of the hair fiber.
    • Soap conditioning: Soybean oil contributes a mild, creamy, conditioning lather.

Dual use across ORY® product lines

Soy is a naturally four-line ingredient because it exists as a water-soluble extract, a rich oil, and a hydrolyzed protein.

Pros and cons of Soy Extract

Pros

Cons

    • Clinically proven brightening: Vehicle-controlled, 12-week evidence [2].
    • Non-bleaching: Works on pigment transfer, not melanocyte toxicity — no hydroquinone-type risks.
    • Gentle: Suitable for sensitive skin and daily use.
    • Multi-form: Extract, oil, and protein cover every ORY® line.
    • Sustainable and affordable: Widely available, plant-based.
    • Soy allergy: Topical reactions are rare but possible in soy-allergic customers.
    • Comedogenicity of the oil: Soybean oil can clog pores in acne-prone skin; use the extract instead.
    • Phytoestrogen questions: Systemic absorption from topical use is negligible, but customers with hormone-sensitive conditions may prefer to consult a physician.
    • Variable potency: Non-standardized extracts vary in isoflavone and protease-inhibitor content.
    • GMO sourcing: ORY® should specify non-GMO soy for clean-label positioning.
    • Protein overload in hair: Excess protein can make fine or low-porosity hair stiff; balance with moisture.

What is the best application of Soy Extract?

Soy extract works best as a daily leave-on brightener and as a protein conditioner in haircare:

    • Brightening serum: AM and PM after cleansing; pair with niacinamide and vitamin C for compounding tone benefits.
    • Moisturizer: Daily soy moisturizer replicates the clinical protocol [2].
    • Night cream: Isoflavones plus peptides for mature skin.
    • Face oil: Soybean oil blend for dry, non-acne-prone skin.
    • Mask: Weekly brightening and antioxidant boost.
    • Protein conditioner or mask: Weekly for damaged, processed, or curly hair; alternate with moisture masks.
    • Leave-in: Light hydrolyzed soy protein spray for strength and shine.
    • Soap and cosmetics: Creamy conditioning bars; brightening base makeup.
