Turmeric extract is the whole-rhizome concentrate of Curcuma longa, containing the curcuminoids (curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, bisdemethoxycurcumin) plus the essential-oil turmerones that pure curcumin lacks. A systematic review of clinical trials found turmeric and curcumin products improved acne, photoaging, radiation dermatitis, psoriasis, and other skin conditions with a good safety profile [1]; curcuminoids inhibit inflammatory NF-κB signaling, scavenge radicals, kill acne bacteria, and inhibit tyrosinase [2, 3]; and ar-turmerone adds anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity of its own. Turmeric is a mainstay of South Asian bridal and daily beauty (ubtan) and of handmade “golden” soap. Its yellow stain and instability are managed with low doses, oil dispersion, or the colorless derivative tetrahydrocurcumin.
What is Turmeric Extract made of?
Turmeric extract is prepared by ethanol/water or CO₂ extraction of dried rhizome (standardized to 20–95% curcuminoids), by grinding to powder, or by steam-distilling the oil. Constituents [2]:
Whole-rhizome extract offers the entourage of curcuminoids plus turmerones; pure curcumin is more potent per gram but stains more.
- Curcuminoids (curcumin ~77%, demethoxycurcumin ~17%, bisdemethoxycurcumin ~3% of the fraction): Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, brightening; yellow.
- Turmerones (ar-turmerone, α/β-turmerone) and zingiberene (essential oil): Anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, penetration-enhancing.
- Tetrahydrocurcumin: Colorless, stable metabolite for brightening cosmetics.
- Polysaccharides and minerals (whole powder): Minor.
What skin type is best suited for Turmeric Extract?
Turmeric extract is an anti-inflammatory and brightening active for congested, inflamed, and uneven skin:
- Acne-prone: Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory; clinical improvement in acne [1].
- Oily: Antimicrobial masks and cleansers.
- Combination: Brightening serums (tetrahydrocurcumin).
- Mature: Antioxidant protection; improved photoaging appearance in clinical studies [1].
- Sensitive: Calms inflammation; use tetrahydrocurcumin or low-level extract; patch test.
- Normal: Antioxidant and glow maintenance.
- Dry: Turmeric-infused oils.
What hair type is best suited for Turmeric Extract?
Turmeric supports scalp health with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial action:
- Dandruff-prone scalp: Antifungal and anti-inflammatory; traditional anti-dandruff paste.
- Oily scalp: Antimicrobial, balancing.
- Sensitive scalp: Calms inflammation at low levels.
- Mature or thinning: Antioxidant scalp support.
- Dry or damaged: Turmeric-infused oil pre-shampoo treatment.
- Straight, wavy, curly, coily, color-treated: Scalp-only; avoid on light hair (stains).
What are the benefits of Turmeric Extract?
Turmeric’s benefits are documented in clinical and mechanistic studies [1–3]:
- Anti-inflammatory: Curcuminoids and turmerones inhibit NF-κB and cytokines [1, 2].
- Antioxidant: Potent radical scavenging; protects against UV stress.
- Antimicrobial: Active against acne bacteria and Malassezia.
- Brightening: Tyrosinase inhibition; tetrahydrocurcumin used specifically for tone.
- Wound healing: Promotes collagen deposition and closure in preclinical studies [3].
- Photoaging: Clinical improvement in facial appearance and redness [1].
- Scalp support: Anti-dandruff tradition.
- Natural colorant: Warm gold for soap and cosmetics.
Dual use across ORY® product lines
Turmeric extract serves all four ORY® lines when color and stability are managed — powder gives soap its classic gold; tetrahydrocurcumin gives cosmetics benefits without stain.
