Grape Seed Oil

At ORY®, we believe you should know what’s in your products and why. This page lists the published research behind what we say about grape seed oil. Each section starts with our claim, then tells you how well the research supports it, then lists the sources so you can read them yourself.

How to read this page

Supported — backed by peer-reviewed research or official safety reviews.

Supported, with caveats — the research points this way, but mostly from laboratory or animal studies, or at different strengths than ORY® uses.

Limited evidence — little or no published research yet. We say so openly.

1. General Description and Role

Claim: Grape seed oil is pressed from grape seeds left over from winemaking. It is light and fast-absorbing. In ORY® products, it helps skin and hair feel soft without a greasy feel.

Verification: Supported. The CIR Expert Panel found plant-derived fatty acid oils, including grape seed oil, safe as used in cosmetics.

      • What it shows: CIR safety assessment of plant oils.
2. Composition and Production

Claim: Grape seed oil is about 65–75% linoleic acid, with oleic acid, vitamin E, and, in unrefined grades, polyphenols.

Verification: Supported. Its composition is well documented; most research on its compounds concerns diet rather than skin.

      • What it shows: Review of grape seed oil compounds (mainly nutritional).
3. Skin Type Suitability

Claim: Grape seed oil suits oily, combination, and normal skin. Dry skin may need a richer oil as well.

Verification: Supported, with caveats. Reviews suggest linoleic-rich oils suit the skin barrier. We found no clinical studies of grape seed oil by skin type.

      • What it shows: Review of plant oils and the skin barrier.
4. Hair and Scalp Suitability

Claim: In haircare, grape seed oil adds light shine without weight.

Verification: Limited evidence. Oils are commonly used to soften hair and reduce the look of frizz; we found no controlled clinical studies of this oil on hair. ORY® haircare products are not intended to treat dandruff, scalp conditions, or hair loss.

5. Benefits

Claim: Grape seed oil helps skin feel soft and smooth with a light, non-greasy finish.

Verification: Supported, with caveats. Reviews support linoleic-rich oils for barrier-friendly moisturizing. ORY® does not make acne or sebum-normalizing claims.

6. Use Across ORY® Product Lines

Claim: Grape Seed Oil is used in all four ORY® product lines.

Verification: Supported. Grape seed oil oxidizes quickly, so ORY® limits it to 10% of oils in soap and adds antioxidants.

      • What it shows: Safety conclusion.
8. Cons

Claim: Grape seed oil goes rancid quickly and may be too light for very dry skin.

Verification: Supported. We list these limits so you have the full picture:

    • Short shelf life. About 6–9 months.
    • Limited occlusion. Not enough alone for very dry skin.
    • Soap. Keep at 10% of oils or less.
    • Limited skin studies. Most research is nutritional.
