Panthenol (dexpanthenol) is pro-vitamin B5: once absorbed, the skin converts it to pantothenic acid, a coenzyme-A component essential for lipid synthesis and cell repair. It is one of the most thoroughly studied cosmetic actives — a clinical review confirms its wound-healing, anti-inflammatory, and moisturizing effects across skin disorders [1]; dexpanthenol accelerated barrier repair and reduced inflammation after surfactant-induced irritation in a controlled study [2]; and panthenol formulations measurably increased skin hydration [3]. It is equally important in haircare: it penetrates the hair shaft, binds moisture, adds flexibility and shine, and, in a clinical leave-on with niacinamide and caffeine, increased hair-fiber diameter [4]. Water-soluble, gentle, and CIR-reviewed as safe [5], panthenol is a workhorse humectant-repair ingredient for ORY® skin, hair, and cosmetics.
What is Panthenol made of?
Panthenol is synthesized from pantolactone and 3-aminopropanol; the D-isomer (dexpanthenol) is the bioactive form. Points to know [1, 5]:
- Pro-vitamin B5 (alcohol analogue of pantothenic acid): Converted enzymatically in skin to pantothenic acid.
- Humectant: Binds water in the stratum corneum and hair cortex.
- Physical form: Clear viscous liquid (75%) or white powder; water- and alcohol-soluble; heat-stable to ~70 °C; pH 4–7 (hydrolyzes at strongly alkaline or acidic pH).
- Typical use: 1–5% skincare; 0.5–2% haircare (higher in masks); 1–2% cosmetics.
- D-panthenol vs DL-panthenol: Only the D form is biologically active; DL is half-strength — ORY® specifies D-panthenol.
What skin type is best suited for Panthenol?
Panthenol suits all seven ORY® skin types and is a first choice for compromised skin:
- Sensitive: Anti-inflammatory; reduces surfactant irritation [2]; suitable for eczema-prone and post-procedure skin.
- Dry: Humectant hydration and barrier repair [2, 3].
- Mature: Supports lipid synthesis and repair; improves elasticity.
- Acne-prone: Calms inflammation; supports healing of lesions; non-comedogenic.
- Oily: Water-based, oil-free hydration.
- Combination: Universal hydration.
- Normal: Daily repair and hydration maintenance.
What hair type is best suited for Panthenol?
Panthenol is the classic haircare conditioning humectant:
- Dry or damaged: Penetrates the shaft; binds moisture; improves flexibility and reduces breakage.
- Mature or thinning: Increased fiber diameter in a clinical leave-on with niacinamide and caffeine [4].
- Curly and coily: Moisture and slip without heaviness.
- Color-treated or chemically processed: Repairs porosity; adds shine.
- Straight and wavy: Body and shine; anti-static.
- Sensitive scalp: Soothes and hydrates the scalp.
- Oily and dandruff-prone scalp: Oil-free scalp conditioning.
What are the benefits of Panthenol?
Panthenol’s benefits are documented in clinical reviews and controlled studies [1–5]:
- Wound healing and repair: Stimulates fibroblast proliferation and epithelialization [1].
- Barrier repair: Accelerated recovery after surfactant damage [2].
- Anti-inflammatory: Reduced redness and irritation [1, 2].
- Hydration: Measurable increase in skin water content [3].
- Anti-itch and soothing: Classic after-sun and post-procedure ingredient.
- Hair moisture, flexibility, and shine: Penetrates the cortex; reduces breakage.
- Hair thickening (combination): Increased fiber diameter [4].
- Cosmetic comfort: Hydrating primers, mascaras (lash conditioning), lip products.
Dual use across ORY® product lines
Panthenol serves leave-on and rinse-off products in three ORY® lines; it hydrolyzes at the high pH of cold-process soap, limiting soap use to liquid and syndet products.
Pros and cons of Panthenol
Pros
Cons
- Extensive clinical evidence: [1–4].
- Skin and hair hero: Rare dual performer.
- Gentle, CIR-reviewed: Baby- and eczema-safe [5].
- Water-soluble, easy to formulate: Broad compatibility.
- Affordable: High value.
- Tacky at high levels: Above ~3% in leave-ons.
- pH window: Hydrolyzes outside pH 4–7; unsuitable for cold-process soap.
- Heat-sensitive above ~70 °C: Add at cool-down.
- DL-panthenol confusion: Specify D-panthenol.
- Rare allergy: Patch test (very uncommon).
What is the best application of Panthenol?
Panthenol is built into hydrating and repair products:
- Repair serum or cream: 2–5% with allantoin, Centella, and ceramides.
- After-sun or post-procedure: 3–5% with aloe.
- Daily moisturizer: 1–2%.
- Cleanser: 1% to reduce surfactant irritation [2].
- Conditioner or mask: 1–2% (masks up to 5%).
- Leave-in or thinning-hair serum: 1–2% with niacinamide and caffeine [4].
- Cosmetics: 1–2% in primers; mascaras for lash conditioning.
