Rosehip extract is derived from the whole fruit (hips) of wild roses, chiefly Rosa canina, and is distinct from rosehip seed oil: the extract concentrates the water-soluble vitamin C (among the highest of any fruit), carotenoids (lycopene, beta-carotene, rubixanthin), flavonoids, ellagitannins, and the anti-inflammatory galactolipid GOPO, while the oil carries the fatty acids and trans-retinoic acid traces. Reviews document rosehip’s antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and collagen-supporting activity [1, 2], and a randomized trial of standardized rosehip powder found improved wrinkle depth, moisture, and elasticity after eight weeks [3]. Clinical use of the oil on surgical scars shows improved healing and pigmentation [4]. Water-soluble and gentle, the extract brightens and protects in every ORY® line, while the oil is reserved for face and hair oils.
What is Rosehip Extract made of?
Rosehip extract is prepared by water, glycerin, or hydro-alcoholic extraction of dried hips (with seeds removed or included), or by drying to powder. Constituents [1, 2]:
- Vitamin C (ascorbic acid): Antioxidant, brightening, collagen cofactor; 300–1,200 mg per 100 g fresh hips.
- Carotenoids (lycopene, beta-carotene, rubixanthin, zeaxanthin): Antioxidant, photoprotective; orange-red color.
- Flavonoids (quercetin, catechin, rutin) and ellagitannins: Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, mildly tyrosinase-inhibiting.
- GOPO (galactolipid): Anti-inflammatory compound unique to rosehip.
- Pectin and fruit acids (malic, citric): Mild humectancy and exfoliation.
- Rosehip seed oil (separate): Linoleic/linolenic-rich regenerating oil with pro-vitamin A traces.
What skin type is best suited for Rosehip Extract?
Rosehip extract suits all seven ORY® skin types as a brightening antioxidant:
- Mature: Improved wrinkles, moisture, and elasticity in a randomized trial (oral powder) [3]; antioxidant support.
- Combination: Brightening serums for uneven tone.
- Normal: Daily vitamin C and carotenoid defense.
- Dry: Extract in creams alongside rosehip seed oil.
- Sensitive: Anti-inflammatory GOPO; gentle natural vitamin C.
- Acne-prone: Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory; helps fade marks; use the extract, not heavy oil.
- Oily: Water-based extract in light serums.
What hair type is best suited for Rosehip Extract?
Rosehip supports scalp health and protects hair from oxidative damage:
- Dry or damaged: Antioxidant extract plus rosehip seed oil for ends.
- Color-treated: Antioxidant protection against fading.
- Sensitive scalp: Anti-inflammatory support.
- Mature or thinning: Antioxidant scalp environment; vitamin C supports collagen around follicles.
- Curly and coily: Seed oil for sealing; extract in leave-ins.
- Straight, wavy, oily scalp, dandruff-prone: Light antioxidant addition.
What are the benefits of Rosehip Extract?
Rosehip’s benefits are supported by reviews and clinical studies [1–4]:
- Antioxidant: Vitamin C, carotenoids, and polyphenols protect against oxidative stress [1, 2].
- Brightening: Vitamin C and flavonoids inhibit melanin and fade dark spots.
- Anti-aging: Improved wrinkle depth, moisture, and elasticity in a randomized trial [3].
- Anti-inflammatory: GOPO and flavonoids reduce inflammatory mediators [2].
- Collagen support: Vitamin C is an essential cofactor for collagen synthesis.
- Scar and pigmentation improvement (oil): Clinical improvement in surgical scars with the seed oil [4].
- Photoprotection: Carotenoids and vitamin C reduce UV-induced damage.
- Hair and scalp protection: Antioxidant defense; conditioning with the oil.
Dual use across ORY® product lines
Rosehip extract is water-soluble and fits all four ORY® lines; the seed oil is a separate Build-Your-Own carrier.
Pros and cons of Rosehip Extract
