Peppermint essential oil is steam-distilled from Mentha × piperita and is defined by menthol (30–55%), which activates the skin’s cold receptor (TRPM8) to produce an immediate cooling sensation, relieve itch, and reduce the perception of pain [1]. Peppermint oil is antimicrobial and antifungal [2], a 10% peppermint preparation relieved tension-type headache when applied to the temples [3], and — of particular interest to ORY® Haircare — 3% peppermint oil promoted hair growth in mice more strongly than 3% minoxidil in one study, increasing follicle depth and dermal thickness [4]. Peppermint is the cooling, energizing note of scalp tonics, foot creams, muscle balms, lip plumpers, and soap. Like eucalyptus, its menthol and cineole content make it unsuitable for young children’s faces, and its dermal limit is about 5% [5].

What is Peppermint Essential Oil made of?

Peppermint oil is steam-distilled from flowering aerial parts (yield ~0.3–0.7%). Composition (ISO 856) [2, 5]:

    • Menthol (30–55%): Cooling TRPM8 agonist; anti-itch, analgesic, antimicrobial [1].
    • Menthone (14–32%) and isomenthone: Minty ketones; antimicrobial.
    • Menthyl acetate (3–10%), menthofuran (1–9%), 1,8-cineole (3–8%), limonene (1–5%): Supporting components; menthofuran is limited for safety.
    • Pulegone (<4%): Hepatotoxic ketone kept low in quality oil.
    • Dermal maximum: ~5.4% (Tisserand); typical leave-on 0.5–2%, foot/muscle up to 3–5%, soap 2–3% [5].

What skin type is best suited for Peppermint Essential Oil?

Peppermint suits body, foot, and oily-skin uses; facial use is low-level:

    • Oily: Cooling, degreasing; 0.5% in cleansers and toners.
    • Acne-prone: Antimicrobial and cooling in blemish washes.
    • Normal: Foot creams, muscle balms, energizing body washes.
    • Combination: Refreshing rinse-off products.
    • Dry: Foot balms with shea (1–2%).
    • Mature: Muscle rubs; itch relief for dry, itchy skin (menthol) [1].
    • Sensitive: ≤0.25% or avoid; menthol can sting.

What hair type is best suited for Peppermint Essential Oil?

Peppermint is a scalp hero with preclinical hair-growth evidence:

    • Mature or thinning: 3% peppermint oil outperformed 3% minoxidil for hair growth in mice [4]; cosmetic “supports a healthy scalp” claims only.
    • Oily scalp: Cooling, degreasing; 0.5–1% in shampoo and scalp tonics.
    • Dandruff-prone scalp: Antifungal and anti-itch [1, 2].
    • Sensitive scalp: Itch relief at ≤0.5%; patch test (tingling is normal, burning is not).
    • Dry or damaged: Scalp-only; keep off dry lengths.
    • Straight, wavy, curly, coily, color-treated: Cooling scalp tonics for all textures.

What are the benefits of Peppermint Essential Oil?

Peppermint essential oil’s benefits are supported by clinical, animal, and pharmacological studies [1–4]:

    • Cooling and anti-itch: Menthol activates TRPM8 cold receptors, relieving itch and heat [1].
    • Analgesic: Topical peppermint relieved tension headache in a controlled study [3].
    • Antimicrobial and antifungal: Menthol and menthone inhibit skin and scalp microbes [2].
    • Hair growth support: Increased follicle number and depth in mice, exceeding minoxidil [4].
    • Scalp circulation: Menthol-induced vasodilation after initial cooling.
    • Energizing aroma: Alertness and refreshment.
    • Lip plumping: Mild tingling and flush in lip products.
    • Soap performance: Strong cooling scent survives cold process; pairs with eucalyptus, rosemary, lemon, lavender.
