Pomegranate extract concentrates the polyphenols of Punica granatum — the ellagitannins punicalagin and punicalin, ellagic acid, and anthocyanins — into one of the most potent antioxidant botanicals available. In human skin cells, pomegranate fractions stimulated keratinocyte proliferation, increased procollagen synthesis, and inhibited the collagen-degrading enzyme MMP-1 [1]; a standardized extract protected fibroblasts from UV damage [3]; and pomegranate polyphenols reduced UV-induced inflammation and tumor formation in animal skin [2].
