Sorbitan olivate is the ester of sorbitan (a sugar-alcohol derived from sorbitol) with olive-oil fatty acids — the oil-loving, low-HLB half of the olive-based emulsifier pair Olivem® 1000, and on its own a water-in-oil emulsifier (Olivem® 900) for rich balms and barrier creams. With cetearyl olivate it builds lamellar liquid-crystal emulsions that mimic skin-barrier lipids and improve hydration and stability [1]; sorbitan esters are reviewed as safe by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Panel [2]. PEG-free, non-ionic, biodegradable, and COSMOS-approved, sorbitan olivate lets ORY® formulate natural creams (with cetearyl olivate) and water-in-oil protective balms (alone) from the same olive-derived family.
What is Sorbitan Olivate made of?
Sorbitan olivate is produced by esterifying sorbitan with olive-oil fatty acids. Points to know [1, 2]:
- Sorbitan (from sorbitol) + olive fatty acids (oleic, palmitic, linoleic, stearic): Waxy, oil-soluble ester.
- Low HLB (~4–5): W/O emulsifier alone; O/W co-emulsifier with cetearyl olivate.
- Lamellar liquid-crystal former (with cetearyl olivate): Skin-mimetic bilayers.
- PEG-free, non-ionic, biodegradable, COSMOS-approved; melts at ~55–60 °C.
What skin type is best suited for Sorbitan Olivate?
Sorbitan olivate suits all seven ORY® skin types — in O/W creams with its partner, or in W/O balms for very dry skin:
- Dry: Fatty-alcohol emollience softens and reduces water loss; sorbitan olivate lets ORY® build richer creams.
- Sensitive: Non-irritating, fragrance-free structural ingredient; suitable for reactive and eczema-prone skin (rare fatty-alcohol allergy — patch test).
- Mature: Supports rich, cushioning creams and barrier balms.
- Normal: Everyday lotion and cream structure.
- Combination: Adjust level for lighter lotions.
- Oily: Use only as part of Olivem 1000 in light lotions; W/O balms are for dry skin.
- Acne-prone: Low comedogenicity at typical levels; keep formulas light.
What hair type is best suited for Sorbitan Olivate?
Sorbitan olivate supports natural hair creams and rich, water-in-oil scalp balms:
- Dry or damaged: W/O hair balms and rich masks; O/W creams with cetearyl olivate.
- Curly and coily: Rich sealing balms and curl creams.
- Sensitive scalp: Protective scalp balms.
- Straight and wavy: Light creams (with partner) only.
- Color-treated: Protective balms for processed ends.
- Oily scalp, dandruff-prone, mature or thinning: Structural; avoid heavy W/O balms on the scalp.
What are the benefits of Sorbitan Olivate?
Sorbitan olivate’s benefits are functional and skin-compatible [1, 2, 3]:
- Lamellar hydration (with cetearyl olivate): Skin-mimetic bilayers hold water [1].
- W/O emulsifier alone: Rich, protective balms and barrier creams that resist water loss.
- Emollient: Olive-derived lipids soften skin [3].
- PEG-free, biodegradable: COSMOS-approved.
- Active-tolerant: Stable with acids and many electrolytes.
- Gentle: Suitable for sensitive and baby skin [2].
- Versatility: One olive family for both O/W and W/O systems.
Dual use across ORY® product lines
Sorbitan olivate serves natural creams and W/O balms, hair creams and balms, and cosmetics; not used in cold-process soap, but useful in solid bars.
