Ferulic acid is a plant phenolic acid found in the cell walls of rice bran, oats, wheat, and coffee, where it protects plants from UV and oxidative stress. In skincare it became famous for one landmark finding: adding 0.5% ferulic acid to a solution of 15% vitamin C and 1% vitamin E stabilized both vitamins and doubled the solution’s photoprotection against UV-induced damage [1], and the resulting “C E Ferulic” combination protected human skin against sunburn cells, thymine dimers, and inflammatory markers in a clinical UV study [2]. Ferulic acid is a strong antioxidant in its own right, absorbing UV and scavenging free radicals, with anti-inflammatory and mild tyrosinase-inhibiting activity [3]. It is the essential partner in ORY®‘s vitamin C serums and a valuable antioxidant in day creams, scalp serums, and antioxidant cosmetics.
What is Ferulic Acid Powder made of?
Ferulic acid is extracted from rice bran oil (γ-oryzanol) or synthesized from vanillin; cosmetic grade is a 99% off-white powder. Points to know [1, 3]:
- Hydroxycinnamic acid phenolic: Absorbs UVB/UVA; donates electrons to neutralize free radicals; regenerates vitamins C and E.
- Solubility: Poor in water; soluble in ethanol, propanediol, propylene glycol, and glycerin-water at warm temperature; typical use 0.5–1%.
- pH: Most stable and active at pH 3–5.5; the vitamin C serum window.
- Synergy: Stabilizes L-ascorbic acid and tocopherol; the 15% C / 1% E / 0.5% ferulic ratio is the clinically validated benchmark [1, 2].
- Light-sensitive: Protect in amber/opaque, airless packaging.
What skin type is best suited for Ferulic Acid Powder?
Ferulic acid suits all seven ORY® skin types as an antioxidant partner:
- Mature: Doubles vitamin C/E photoprotection [1]; collagen-protecting antioxidant.
- Combination: Brightening antioxidant serums.
- Normal: Daily environmental defense.
- Oily: Water-glycol serums; no oil.
- Acne-prone: Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory; non-comedogenic.
- Dry: In antioxidant creams with vitamin E.
- Sensitive: Generally well tolerated; the low pH of C-E-ferulic serums may sting — use in creams at pH 5 instead.
What hair type is best suited for Ferulic Acid Powder?
Ferulic acid protects the scalp and hair from oxidative and UV stress:
- Color-treated: Antioxidant protection against UV and oxidative fading.
- Mature or thinning: Antioxidant scalp serums with caffeine and rosemary.
- Sensitive scalp: Anti-inflammatory support.
- Dry or damaged: Antioxidant in leave-ins.
- Straight, wavy, curly, coily, oily scalp, dandruff-prone: Optional antioxidant addition.
What are the benefits of Ferulic Acid Powder?
Ferulic acid’s benefits are supported by landmark clinical and laboratory studies [1–3]:
- Stabilizes vitamins C and E: Extends shelf life and doubles photoprotection [1].
- Photoprotection: Reduced UV-induced sunburn cells, DNA damage, and inflammatory markers in human skin [2].
- Antioxidant: Scavenges free radicals; absorbs UV [3].
- Anti-inflammatory: Reduces UV-induced inflammation [2, 3].
- Brightening support: Mild tyrosinase inhibition [3].
- Collagen protection: Limits oxidative degradation of collagen.
- Hair and scalp antioxidant: Protects color and scalp lipids.
- Formula antioxidant: Slows oxidation of other actives.
Dual use across ORY® product lines
Ferulic acid serves leave-on products in three ORY® lines; it is unstable and wasted in rinse-off soap.
