Rosehip seed oil is cold-pressed from the seeds of wild roses — chiefly Rosa canina and the Chilean Rosa rubiginosa (rosa mosqueta) — and is one of the most celebrated regenerating facial oils. It is rich in linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids (barrier and anti-inflammatory), carries carotenoids (its amber color) and traces of trans-retinoic acid, and has a clinical record: pure rosehip seed oil improved the appearance, erythema, and discoloration of post-surgical scars in a controlled study [1], and reviews document its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative activity [2, 3]. Light and dry-feeling, it suits most skin types, including acne-prone skin, but oxidizes quickly and must be kept cold with antioxidants. The water-soluble extract (vitamin C, GOPO) is covered in the Rosehip Extract document.
What is Rosehip Oil made of?
Rosehip seed oil is cold-pressed (or CO₂-extracted) from cleaned, dried seeds. Composition [2]:
- Linoleic acid (40–50%, omega-6): Barrier repair; acne-friendly.
- Alpha-linolenic acid (25–35%, omega-3): Anti-inflammatory.
- Oleic acid (12–18%): Emollient.
- Carotenoids (β-carotene, lycopene), trans-retinoic acid (trace), vitamin E, phytosterols: Regenerative, antioxidant; amber-orange color.
- Comedogenic rating ~1; shelf life 6 months (refrigerate).
- Soap data: SAP ~0.137 g NaOH/g; use only as a superfat at trace (2–5%) to preserve fragile fatty acids.
What skin type is best suited for Rosehip Oil?
Rosehip oil suits all seven ORY® skin types, with a dry, fast-absorbing feel:
- Mature: Regenerative; carotenoids and retinoic-acid traces; scar and pigmentation improvement [1].
- Combination: Light enough for mixed skin.
- Acne-prone: Linoleic-rich; low comedogenicity; fades post-acne marks [1].
- Oily: Dry-feel oil; sparing use.
- Normal: Daily radiance oil.
- Dry: Barrier lipids; layer with richer oils.
- Sensitive: Anti-inflammatory omega-3; patch test.
What hair type is best suited for Rosehip Oil?
Rosehip nourishes scalp and hair with essential fatty acids:
- Dry or damaged: Rosehip coats and softens the fiber, reducing moisture loss and mechanical breakage.
- Curly and coily: Sealing oil over water-based leave-ins (LOC/LCO method).
- Color-treated or chemically processed: Replenishes lipids stripped by chemical services.
- Straight and wavy: Light; a few drops on ends add shine.
- Oily scalp: Lengths and ends only.
- Sensitive scalp: Neutral carrier for scalp actives; patch test.
- Dandruff-prone, mature or thinning: Carrier for rosemary, peppermint, or tea tree scalp treatments.
What are the benefits of Rosehip Oil?
Rosehip oil’s benefits are supported by clinical and review literature [1–3]:
- Scar and mark improvement: Improved post-surgical scar appearance and pigmentation [1].
- Regeneration: Carotenoids and trans-retinoic-acid traces support cell turnover.
- Barrier repair: Linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids [3].
- Anti-inflammatory: Omega-3 fatty acids [2].
- Antioxidant: Carotenoids and vitamin E.
- Brightening: Fades hyperpigmentation with continued use.
- Hair and scalp nutrition: Essential fatty acids.
- Soap superfat: Luxury conditioning.
Dual use across ORY® product lines
Rosehip oil serves all four ORY® lines, with soap use limited to superfat because of its fragility.
